Al Mushrif Park Birding Strategy

To explore the area thoroughly, plan to spend 2-3 hours here.

This place has a unique and interesting Ghaf Prosopis cinerea woodland, which is native to the area. It's a great spot to observe birds during winter, and you can also look for the Pallid Scops Owl after dark throughout the year.

Birds

As of December 2020, 114 bird species (excluding escaped birds) have been documented here.

The main attraction is undoubtedly the resident Pallid Scops Owl, which can be found near the mosque (refer to the map below). Dubai Mushrif Park has provided birdwatchers with excellent views of the owls for over 20 years. The owls often come down to the grass to feed under the floodlights on the surrounding buildings.

They can be quite comfortable around people, but it's advisable to bring a strong flashlight in case they stay in the trees. You can hear them calling after dusk, usually inside the closed and fenced-in area. However, be aware that sometimes it can be challenging to locate them, as some birdwatchers have experienced.

Other common resident birds include the Grey Francolin, Eurasian Collared Dove, and White-cheeked Bulbul. With some luck, you may also spot the Arabian Babbler, another resident bird that is often seen near the dump-site at coordinates 25.222339, 55.454453. Yellow-throated Sparrows breed starting from April and can be frequently observed behind the swimming pool. Another summer breeding bird is the Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, which prefers bushy and thicker areas.

Between late October and March, the Eastern Black Redstart, resembling the Common Redstart, is commonly seen here. You may also encounter several species of Sylvia warblers, including the Lesser Whitethroat, Menetries's Warbler, and possibly the Eastern Orphean Warbler.

Raptors are often observed in Mushrif National Park from October to April. You can try viewing them from the elevated parking lots at the following coordinates:

  • 25.214621, 55.450083
  • 25.215635, 55.458266

Some of the raptor species regularly seen here are the Crested Honey Buzzard, Greater Spotted Eagle, Shikra, Western Marsh Harrier, and occasionally the Pallid and Montagu's Harrier, as well as the Eurasian Sparrowhawk.

There have been rare sightings in the area, including the European Honey Buzzard during migration, Asian Koel, Little Swift, Ashy Drongo, a returning Black Drongo, and other uncommon species like the Semicollared Flycatcher, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Masked Shrike, and Olive-backed Pipit.
