About this car
The Porsche 918 Spyder is the latest super sports car from the German manufacturer and it combines motorsport technology with hybrid drive efficiency to provide maximum performance and minimum consumption. The 918 Spyder seats two in a carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) monocoque and is powered by one gas engine and two electric motors. The mid-mounted 4.6-liter V-8 produces 608-hp thanks to dry-sump lubrication, titanium connecting rods, no external belt drives and CFRP oil tank, air filter box and air intake. The exhaust pipes exit from the body directly above the engine rather than out of the back of the car, this helps lower temperatures in the engine compartment, save weight and lower back pressure. The rear mounted electric motor is connected to the engine in a parallel hybrid configuration and provides 154-hp to power the 918 on its own or in combination with the V-8; while the independent front electric motor can provide 127-hp to give the 918 all-wheel drive whenever needed. Combined, the hybrid system produces a total of 887-hp. The lithium-ion battery can be charged in 2.5 hours with the 240V home charging dock, or in just 25-30 minutes with the DC speed charging station. A seven-speed PDK with steering wheel mounted shift paddles is the only transmission choice. An optional Weissach Package shaves 90lbs thanks to the deletion of the audio system and air conditioning, less sound insulation, more interior carbon fiber and magnesium wheels. Standard features include full LED headlights, a Burmester sound system, active aerodynamics, 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, and a black panel technology touchscreen center console. The 918 Spyder is all new for 2015 and Porsche plans to build only 918 units.
